Origin traditions

Myoji-yurai associates an origin with Nanri village in Saga district, historical Hizen. Its user-edited explanation is a research lead, not proof that every Nanri family shares that birthplace or one ancestor.

Regional leads

The private surname database lists additional readings and identifies Saga and Fukuoka as areas with many bearers. Confirm a particular family’s reading directly; the regional estimates are not a census verified by this page.

Documented people

Fumio Nanri (1910–1975) was a Japanese jazz trumpeter born in Osaka who formed the Hot Peppers in 1934. His biography attests use of the surname; it is not a migration history for all Nanri families.

Documentary records

NDL Search catalogs Aiko Hidaka’s 2021 study of poetry collections associated with Nanri Yurin, pages 111–212 of a report on late-Edo poetry in Saga. The catalog is a route to documents, not a claim that their originals were examined here.

Genealogy research

CiNii also catalogs a study of Louis Armstrong and Fumio Nanri. Use biographical records, local histories and family documents to connect dates and places; a shared surname alone does not establish kinship.

Research and genealogy notes

This page documents Japanese surname usage, not the Chinese compound-surname lineage previously asserted. No evidence supports the former Runan clan-hall claim or a universal ancestor or generation sequence. Identical characters do not establish a connection to Chinese place names or personal titles.
