Aisin-Gioro Clan

Clan identity and Manchu name

• Manchu romanization: Aisin Gioro; Chinese: 愛新覺羅 / 爱新觉罗.
• Aisin: usually understood as gold.
• Gioro: the clan name; its original meaning should not be reduced to “tribe.”
• It belongs to the Qing imperial clan system, not the Han commandery, clan hall or ancestral-hall model.

Formation and historical origins

• Official Qing genealogies trace the mythical ancestor to Bukūri Yongšon.
• Early figures open to historical study include the Jianzhou Jurchen leader Möngke Temür, followed in the official lineage by Fuman, Giocangga, Taksi and Nurhaci.
• Nurhaci rose at Hetu Ala, present-day Xinbin, Liaoning. Ningguta and Changbai traditions should not be compressed into one proven migration route.
• The date when the clan name became fixed and the scope of earlier Tong naming remain debated.

Early lineage framework

The main official framework can be summarized as Bukūri Yongšon (mythic ancestor) → early Jianzhou Jurchen ancestors → Möngke Temür → Fuman → Giocangga → Taksi → Nurhaci. Myth, posthumous dynastic genealogy and contemporary records must remain distinct evidence levels.

Imperial Clan and Gioro

• Imperial Clan (Zongshi): centered on Taksi’s direct descendants and identified by the yellow girdle.
• Gioro: collateral imperial kin of the same wider ancestry, identified by the red girdle.
• These were legal and genealogical categories inside the Qing imperial house, not two modern surnames.
• Demotion, adoption, succession and marriage require checking the relevant Jade Genealogy entry.

The imperial Jade Genealogy

• Qing imperial genealogies are known as the Yudieor Jade Genealogy, compiled and managed by the Imperial Clan Court.
• They organize imperial lines, branches, generations, names, titles, life dates, marriages and children.
• The shorthand “yellow books for Zongshi, red books for Gioro” must be checked against surviving volumes and period rules.
• A private family tree alone cannot establish official Qing imperial status.

Official naming sequence

Common Qing sequence: Yin, Hong, Yong, Mian, Yi, Zai, Pu, Yu, Heng, Qi, Tao, Kai, Zeng, Qi.

Sequence added by Puyi: Jing, Zhi, Kai, Rui, Xi, Ying, Yuan, Sheng, Zheng, Zhao, Mao, Xiang.

• These characters served male naming in defined branches; they are not a universal Han-style generation poem.
• After Yinzhen became emperor, many brothers changed Yin to Yun because of the naming taboo.
• The Jiaqing Emperor changed his name from Yongyan to Yongyan written with a rarer first character.
• A shared generation character does not prove descent without parentage, branch, title and genealogy records.

Migration and residence

1. Jianzhou period: Hetu Ala and the wider Jianzhou Jurchen sphere were central.
2. Later Jin and early Qing: the political center moved to Liaoyang and Shenyang; after 1644 many imperial clansmen moved to Beijing.
3. Qing period: branches also lived around Shengjing, imperial tombs, official postings and appanages.
4. After 1912: Beijing and northeast China remained important, with movement to Tianjin, Shanghai and overseas.

Surnames and names after the Qing

• Some descendants adopted Jin, often linked to the meaning of Aisin; Zhao, Zhao written 肇, Ai and Luo also occur.
• Reasons differed by branch and included household registration, social pressure, concealment and personal choice.
• Modern bearers of those surnames cannot be treated as imperial descendants without a continuous genealogy.
• Qi Gong’s lineage is documented, but his name does not establish Qi as a universal clan surname.
• Legal names, artistic signatures and family usage should be recorded separately.

Qing imperial rulers

1. Aisin-Gioro Nurhaci1559-1626 · Qing Taizu; founder of Later Jin

   Unified the Jianzhou Jurchen groups, founded Later Jin and established the Eight Banners.

2. Aisin-Gioro Hong Taiji1592-1643 · Qing Taizong

   Adopted Manchu as the people’s name, renamed the state Great Qing and expanded its institutions.

3. Aisin-Gioro Fulin1638-1661 · Shunzhi Emperor; Qing Shizu

   The first Qing emperor to rule after the conquest of Beijing, which became the capital.

4. Aisin-Gioro Xuanye1654-1722 · Kangxi Emperor; Qing Shengzu

   Defeated the Three Feudatories, incorporated Taiwan, managed the northeast frontier and campaigned against Galdan.

5. Aisin-Gioro Yinzhen1678-1735 · Yongzheng Emperor; Qing Shizong

   Reformed taxation and fiscal administration and established the Grand Council.

6. Aisin-Gioro Hongli1711-1799 · Qianlong Emperor; Qing Gaozong

   Oversaw major territorial and cultural projects, including compilation of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries.

7. Aisin-Gioro Yongyan1760-1820 · Jiaqing Emperor; Qing Renzong

   Punished Heshen after taking personal rule and confronted rebellion, fiscal strain and official corruption.

8. Aisin-Gioro Minning1782-1850 · Daoguang Emperor; Qing Xuanzong

   Reigned during the First Opium War, a major turning point in modern Chinese history.

9. Aisin-Gioro Yizhu1831-1861 · Xianfeng Emperor; Qing Wenzong

   Faced the Taiping Rebellion and the Second Opium War.

10. Aisin-Gioro Zaichun1856-1875 · Tongzhi Emperor; Qing Muzong

    Succeeded as a child while the empress dowagers governed and self-strengthening programs developed.

11. Aisin-Gioro Zaitian1871-1908 · Guangxu Emperor; Qing Dezong

    Supported the Hundred Days’ Reform and was later confined at Yingtai.

12. Aisin-Gioro Puyi1906-1967 · Xuantong Emperor; last Qing emperor

    After abdication he lived in Tianjin, headed Manchukuo, underwent postwar reform and wrote From Emperor to Citizen.

Other imperial clansmen and modern figures

1. Aisin-Gioro Dorgon1612-1650 · Prince Rui; prince regent

   Led the Qing conquest of Beijing and was a central figure in early Qing government.

2. Aisin-Gioro Yixin1833-1898 · Prince Gong

   Worked on late Qing diplomacy and self-strengthening and headed the Zongli Yamen.

3. Aisin-Gioro Shanqi1866-1922 · Prince Su

   A late Qing imperial clansman and political figure who later lived in Lüshun.

4. Aisin-Gioro Zaitao1887-1970 · Imperial clansman and military official

   Inspected European armies and later served as a deputy to the National People’s Congress.

5. Qi Gong1912-2005 · Scholar, calligrapher and painter

   A descendant of Hongzhou, Yongzheng’s fifth son; he published as Qi Gong and rejected prestige based on imperial ancestry.

Affinal figure: an important distinction

Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang, Bumbutaiwas born into the Mongol Khorchin Borjigit clan. She was Hong Taiji’s consort, the Shunzhi Emperor’s mother and the Kangxi Emperor’s grandmother. She is central to imperial history but was not Aisin-Gioro by birth.

Genealogy and root-tracing rules

1. Confirm the name, Manchu and Chinese forms, generation character, parents and branch.
2. Check Zongshi or Gioro status, banner affiliation, title line, marriage and residence.
3. Prioritize the Jade Genealogy, Imperial Clan Court, banner, tomb, household and reliable family records.
4. Connecting modern Jin, Zhao, 肇, Ai or Luo families requires an unbroken documentary line.
5. Historical rulers and princes must not be auto-linked as a user’s direct ancestors.

Evidence boundaries

• Do not assign Han-style clan halls or commanderies.
• Do not infer that every modern Jin family descends from Aisin-Gioro.
• Keep dynastic myth, retrospective lineage and contemporary records at separate evidence levels.
• Drama, unofficial tales and palace legend are not formal lineage evidence.
