Main Origins
The surname Ao mainly derives from the Mi and Ji surnames. One branch is attributed to the descendants of Tai Ao, teacher of the ancient emperor Zhuanxu; another came from the royal clan of the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period.

Migration and Distribution
Before the Qin period, the Ao surname was mainly active south of the Yangtze River. During the Song period it was concentrated mainly in Fujian, while Jiangxi was its largest province of distribution during the Ming period. Today Guizhou has the largest Ao population, about 27% of the national total, followed by Henan, Hunan, Yunnan, Guangxi, and Jiangxi.

Historical Figure
Ao Taosun was a renowned poet from Fuqing, Fujian, during the Southern Song period. His works include Cai'an Ji and Quweng Shiping.
