Bing is a Chinese surname with three principal lineages from the Ji, Jiang, and Ying surnames. Today it is mainly distributed in Shandong, Anhui, and Liaoning.
One lineage derives from the fief of Ji Yu, a Jin official; another from the fief of Jiang Chu, a Qi official; and a third is associated with the Northern Wei grant of the surname Bing to Li Ling's descendants, later simplified to Bing.
Records concerning the origins of the Bing surname appear in the Tongzhi, Xingyuan, and Fengsu Tong; the Tongzhi states that ancient Bing was also written as Bing, with the two forms interchangeable.
The Bing surname is associated with the Lu and Pingyang commanderies. Its hall names include Lujun Hall, Pingyang Hall, and Caoshang Hall.
The Bing surname is widely distributed but numerically small, with communities recorded in Shandong, Anhui, Shaanxi, Liaoning, Beijing, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Taiwan, and Oklahoma in the United States.
Bing Ji was a native of Lu during the Han dynasty, succeeded Wei Xiang as chancellor, and was enfeoffed as Marquis Boyang. Bing Qian, from Mengcheng, Anhui, was a contemporary specialist in internal medicine.
