One branch descends from Chang Hong, a minister of King Jing of Zhou, whose descendants adopted Chang as their surname; another is associated with the Chang surname among the Yi marquis of Shu.
Zheng Qiao described the surname as descending from the Zhou minister Chang Hong and listed Wei Commandery and Dongping as its commandery origins. The Zhang Chan Inscription records that Shu had a Chang clan among its Yi marquises.
The recorded commandery origins are Wei Commandery and Dongping. The ancestral halls are Wei Commandery Hall, also called Ye Commandery Hall or Linzhang Hall, and Classical Music Hall.
