Hui Religious-Title Origin
The compilation states that one Hui branch derived the surname from the Islamic title Danishmand, rendered in Chinese as “答失蛮” or “答失曼.” During surname Sinicization, some ahongs allegedly adopted the homophonic character “答” from its first syllable. The source also stresses that this branch has complex origins and should not be treated as uniform.
Claimed Dalanggude Mongol Origin
According to a report explicitly qualified as “it is said,” a Mongol 答 lineage in Baijia Village, Chi Town, Dali County, Shaanxi, formerly belonged to the Dalanggude clan. After an early-Ming prohibition on non-Han surnames, most members reportedly adopted surnames such as Liang or Da, while those settled in Baijia Village chose the homophonic surname 答. This remains a reported tradition, not an established historical fact.
