Formation of the Daye Surname
During the Western Wei period, Yuwen Tai, acting in the name of the Western Wei emperor, bestowed the Xianbei surname “Daye” on Li Hu and used bestowed surnames and names to assimilate people including Li Hu.

The Old Book of Tang, Biography of Emperor Gaozu, records that Li Hu helped establish the dynasty, was counted among the Eight Pillar States, and was accordingly bestowed the surname Daye.

Restoration of the Li Surname
The New Book of Tang, Biography of Emperor Gaozu, records that Li Yuan restored the Li surname while serving as chancellor under Northern Zhou; afterward, the name Daye Yuan was no longer continued.
