Dongmen / Tung-men
Dongmen is a Chinese compound surname. Its present-day population is extremely small, and it is not among the 300 most common surnames in mainland China.
The Dongmen surname originated in the state of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period. Prince Sui, courtesy name Xiangzhong, lived by the eastern gate of Qufu and was therefore styled Dongmen Xiangzhong; his descendants adopted Dongmen as their surname.
After the Han dynasty, some clan members simplified Dongmen to the single-character surname Dong or Men, causing the compound surname to decline. Historical records of it also became less frequent after the Tang and Song dynasties.
The Dongmen surname commonly uses Lujun Hall and Qufu Hall as hall names.
Early clan members were concentrated around Qufu in Shandong and later spread to Henan and Hebei. Today the surname is found mainly in Shandong, Henan, and Heilongjiang, with no records in Taiwan.
Recorded bearers of the surname include Dongmen Guifu, an official of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period, and Dongmen Yun of the Han dynasty.
