Two Main Origins
The main origins of the Du surname are two branches: one from descendants of Shennong and the other from descendants of Emperor Yao. The Qi-surname Du branch has a history of at least 2,700 years.

Historical Records
Records of Du Kang
Regarding Du Kang, the Wanli-period Zhili Ruzhou Gazetteer records that he made wine at Dushui in Yiyang. The Yiyang Gazetteer of the 18th Daoguang year and the Ruzhou Gazetteer of the 20th Daoguang year also contain similar records concerning the site.

Existing Du genealogies record halls including Baotian, Sicheng, Shanggu and Jingzhao. They also record migrations such as Du Gao's move from Jinling to Wuxi in the early Northern Song, Du Hongzhai's move to Huanggan in Yixing in the late Yuan, and one branch's move from Yangxin to Gaomi during the Ming Longqing era.

Migration and Distribution
Historical Distribution and Migration
Before the Qin period, the Du surname was mainly active in Shaanxi. During the Qin and Han periods it had spread to Henan, Shanxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Shandong and elsewhere. By the Tang dynasty it was found north and south of the Yangtze, and it first entered Taiwan in the late Ming.
