Duanmu / Tuan-mu
The Duanmu surname has fewer than 1,000 people nationwide, mostly scattered across Nanjing and Suzhou in Jiangsu and Kunming in Yunnan.
The origin of the Duanmu surname is linked to Yu Xiong, teacher of King Wen of Zhou. Yu Xiong’s second son was named Duanmu, and his descendants adopted the name as their surname.
Among families with the Mu surname derived from Duanmu, some still retain “Duanmu” as their family hall name.
After Qin Shi Huang unified the six states, descendants of Duanmu Ci simplified Duanmu into single-character surnames such as Duan, Mu, and Mu with the water radical to avoid disaster. During the Ming and Qing periods, some descendants joined the Hui people and changed the Mu surname with the water radical to Mu.
During the Spring and Autumn period, Duanmu Ci, styled Zigong, was one of Confucius’s “seventy-two worthies” and one of the earliest Confucian merchants in Chinese history.
The Chinese Duanmu surname formed between the Western Zhou and Spring and Autumn periods, while the Japanese “Duanmu” surname is described as appearing after the 1875 Surname Compulsory Ordinance.
