Fan / Fan
The Fan surname ranks 102nd among surnames in China today and accounts for approximately 0.17% of the Han Chinese population.
The Fan surname has origins associated mainly with the Ji, Zi, Mi, and minority ethnic surname-change lineages. The Ji lineage descended from Zhongshanfu, a descendant of King Wen of Zhou, and took the surname from his fief of Fan.
By the Qin and Han periods, the Fan surname was widely distributed across Henan, including Weishi, Luyang in Nanyang, Pingshi County in Yiyang Commandery, and Huyang in Nanyang.
The two major historical commandery traditions of the Fan surname were Nanyang and Shangdang. Genealogical records also contain hall names such as Chongde, Jinjian, Yongsi, and Roujia.
The Fan surname expanded early from Jiyuan in Henan into Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, Jiangsu, and Shandong. From the Tang and Song periods it migrated south on a large scale; in the early Ming it was also dispersed to several regions through the Hongdong locust-tree migrations, and by the Qing it was widespread north and south of the Yangtze, with some branches crossing the sea to Taiwan.
The Laifeng Fan genealogy in Hubei records the new generation-name sequence: “Guang Ming Zheng Da, Xing Sheng Fa Qiang, Yi Mou Hong Yuan, Shi De Yong Chang.”
