Fang / Fang
Fang is an ancient Chinese surname, primarily originating from the ancient Jiang-surname Fang Lei lineage, with a long history of transmission.
One lineage is said to have taken the surname from Fangshan, where Lei, a descendant of Yandi, was enfeoffed. Another lineage originated from the Ji surname in the Western Zhou period, with some descendants of Fang Shu adopting their ancestor's personal name as a surname.
During the Western Zhou period, Fang Shu was a famous general of King Xuan of Zhou and led a campaign against the Jing-Man. His military achievements are recorded in the Records of the Grand Historian, and later Fang clans often identified themselves as descendants of Fang Shu, the grand officer of Zhou.
The Fang clan's main commandery is Henan Commandery, while Xin'an Commandery is an important commandery for Fang lineages south of the Yangtze. The common hall name of Fang lineages in Jieyang is Liugui Hall, with branches using Fengxian, Yanyi, Xiangbao, Shaode, Sijing, and Dunmu Halls.
After the Wei and Jin periods, Fang lineages migrated from the Central Plains and Henan toward Jiangsu-Zhejiang and then Fujian. Fujian, Guangdong, and Zhejiang became major areas of settlement, while eastern Guangdong and Chaoshan became an important area of growth in Lingnan. From the Southern Song through the Ming and Qing periods, Jieyang Fang lineages established settlements, expanded, and flourished, with some members moving to Hailufeng, western Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia.
Among the notable Fang figures of Jieyang, Fang Jizhi was a Southern Song official, Fang Yao was a recluse of the late Southern Song, Fang Lu was a Ming official, Fang Yingdao was a Qing official, and Fang Yao served as the Qing dynasty's Admiral of the Guangdong Fleet.
