Origins

Tradition of Descent from the Ying Clan

The Feng genealogy of Xinhua, Hunan, states that Ying Jichang, the second son of Duke Xian of Qin, changed his surname to Feng while fleeing persecution by Duke Xiao of Qin. Most descendants retained Feng and revered him as the surname ancestor.

Tradition of Descent from Lord Fengchun

Another lineage traces itself to Lou Jing of the Western Han. He was granted the surname Liu and titled Lord Fengchun; some descendants adopted Feng from his title and revered Lou Jing, or Liu Jing, as their surname ancestor.

Tradition Linked to Ancient Yue Migration

The Qianjia Xing identifies the Feng clan as a “Guilin clan.” A related tradition connects the surname with late Warring States migrations of ancient Yue peoples, saying Feng first served as a group name, was simplified to 奉 during the Han, and became widespread as a surname by the Tang and Song periods.
