The Fu surname was originally rare and is traced to Shi Fu of Zheng in the Spring and Autumn period. During character reform, 傅 was simplified to 付, leading many people surnamed 傅 to use 付. In ancient times, 付 and 傅 were separate surnames with different origins.
Fu Ji of Dacheng, Hebei, is recorded as an ancient historical figure bearing the Fu surname; Shi Fu of Zheng in the Spring and Autumn period is also presented as an ancestral figure in the surname’s tradition.
The Fu surname is associated with Beidi and Qinghe commanderies, and with the hall names Beidi Hall, Qinghe Hall, and Xing Shang Hall.
Before the Qin period, the Fu surname was active in northern Henan and southern Shanxi. Around the Qin-Han transition it reached Shandong and moved toward Gansu, Ningxia, Sichuan, and the southwest. By the Western Jin, it had spread to Hebei, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang; it entered Fujian in the late Tang and Taiwan in the early Qing.
Genealogical records state that Fu Baiyilang moved to the seat of Shanghang County in Tingzhou, Fujian, in the early Southern Song. His third-generation descendant Fu Nianjiulang later moved to Baisha south of the county and was designated the founding ancestor of the Shangfu Fujian branch.
