Origins

Origin in the State of Qi

One branch of the Fu surname derives from the Jiang lineage and descends from Fu Zidan, a grandee of the State of Qi in the Spring and Autumn period. It adopted the character Fu from the ancestor's name, and Fu Zidan is regarded as the founding ancestor of the surname.

Multiple Lineages

The Fu surname also arose through the sinicization of the Baekje clans Fufushun and Fudang after their entry into the Central Plains during the Tang period, and through the descendants of Zhang Fushi, who adopted Fu after an imperial surname grant in the Ming period. Mongol, Manchu, Daur, and other minority groups also include people who adopted Fu as a sinicized surname.
