Gao / Kao
The Gao surname mainly has two origins: the Gao Yi clan and the Jiang surname.
One Jiang-surname Gao branch descended from the heirs of Duke Tai of Qi. Gongzi Gao received Gao as his fief, and his grandson Gao Xi became a minister of Qi; his descendants became an important branch of the Gao surname.
The Guangyun records that descendants of Duke Tai of Qi took the surname after receiving Gao as a fief; the ancient location of Gao is not recorded in early texts.
Existing Gao genealogical records include the hall names Yunxia Tang, Lianjie Tang, and Yuyuan Tang.
Before the Qin dynasty, the Gao surname was mainly active in northern China. During the Qin and Han periods, it spread across northern China, Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia, and the Central Plains.
