Gongcheng / Kung-ch'eng
Gongcheng is a compound surname not included in the traditional Chinese Hundred Surnames; its population distribution is currently unclear.
The Gongcheng surname arose among descendants of Qin and Han noble clans who adopted a noble rank as their surname. Gongcheng was the eighth of twenty ranks in the Qin and Han noble system, and descendants of hereditary holders adopted Gongcheng as their surname.
The Fengsu Tong records Gongcheng as originating from the ranks established during Shang Yang's reforms in Qin. The Zheng Tongzhi, in its Clan Lineages section, includes Gongcheng and explains it as an ancient noble rank.
A four-character couplet used in Gongcheng ancestral halls is “Raise the large cup in penalty; renowned for healing arts,” referring respectively to Gongcheng Buren and Gongcheng Yangqing.
In mainland China and Taiwan, the Gongcheng surname is not listed among the top one hundred surnames.
Recorded Gongcheng figures include Gongcheng Buren of Wei during the Warring States period, the Han medical practitioner Gongcheng Yangqing, the Tang-era Jinshi Gongcheng Yi, and the Song-era Gongcheng Liangbi.
