Two Origin Traditions
One tradition traces the surname to the ancient State of Gui, taking the state name as the surname, though its origin and descendants are unknown. Another traces it to the Ji surname: descendants of Ji Zhen adopted Gui to avoid disaster during the Qin period, giving this lineage a history of more than 2,200 years.
