A Liaodong branch traced its ancestral home to Penglai, Shandong, while its earlier surname is variously given as Gao, Zhan, or Zhan. After its leader Songshan joined the recovery of Albazin and relocated to Qiqihar, he was granted the surname Guo for being “brave and resolute” and became known as Guo Songshan.
The earliest stated record of the surname is in the Ming work Wanxing Tongpu. In the early Ming, Guo families from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongdong County, Zhaocheng County, and nearby areas were ordered to migrate through Hongdong’s Great Pagoda Tree; by the late Qing, their descendants lived in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, and Shanxi.
The Guo surname’s ancestral commanderies are Penglai (Dengzhou) and Liaodong. Its hall names include Penglai Hall, also called Dengzhou Hall, Liaodong Hall, and Huaishan Hall.
Guo generation sequences are recorded for Qiqihar, Shenyang, and Fengrun in Tangshan. The Qiqihar sequence is: “奕世承先泽崇融福寿昌永存仁孝志富贵定徽祥.”
