Gui Man received the posthumous title Hu Gong Man, and his descendants adopted the posthumous title as their surname, forming the Gui-lineage Hu surname; this branch has a history of at least 3,000 years.
The Gui-lineage Hu surname originated from a state name, and descendants of the state of Hu adopted Hu after its destruction. The Ji-lineage Hu surname also originated from a state name, and descendants of the relevant Hu state adopted Hu after Chu destroyed the state.
Anding is the Hu clan's most widespread and renowned commandery designation and hall name. Anding Hall appears alongside Huaiyang Hall and Xincai Hall, while Hu Zongxian founded Shien Hall during the Ming dynasty.
Before the Qin period, the Hu surname was mainly active south of the Yellow River and in the Huai River and Han River basins. During the Qin, Han, and Jin periods it spread widely; by the Tang and Song period it had become prominent in the Yangtze River basin, and it entered Taiwan in the early Qing period.
Hu Guang of the Western Han served as Grand Tutor; Hu Zongxian of the Ming dynasty served as Minister of War.
