Origins
Si Lineage and the State of Hu
One branch traces to the Si lineage. Hu was a vassal state during the Xia, was called Chonghu under the Shang, and was renamed Hu under the Qin; after the state fell, its descendants adopted the state name as their surname. The former state lay around present-day Hu County in Shaanxi.

Xianbei-Derived Branch
During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the three-character Xianbei surname Hudigan of the Northern Wei's Daibei region was changed into the surnames Hu and Gan after its bearers entered the Central Plains.
