The Hua surname appears in official histories from the Tang dynasty; recorded figures include the Vice Director of the Treasury Department Hua Jilu and the famous general Hua Jingding.
The Hua lineage's commandery seat was Dongping, in the area of present-day Dongping County, Shandong.
From the late Tang through the Five Dynasties, Hua families moved to Sichuan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi. After the Song and Yuan periods, they spread to Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, and Hubei; in the early Ming, some Shanxi Hua families migrated with the Hongdong locust-tree settlers, and after the Qing period they moved into Northeast China and northeastern Inner Mongolia.
Hua Runsheng, a Ming-dynasty native of Shaowu, Fujian, served as magistrate of Gutian and as an education commissioner, and authored Jiexuan Ji.
The surname work Xingyuan records that the Hua surname came from the He lineage, but the reason for the change from He to Hua cannot be established; the explanation based on similar pronunciation currently lacks conclusive evidence.
