The surname Hua derives from the Ji surname and took its name from the Western Zhou state of Hua. Hua was a small state of the same clan enfeoffed by the Zhou dynasty; it first had its capital at Hua, later moved it to Fei, and was eventually destroyed by Jin.
Hua Bo is honored as the founding ancestor of the Hua surname. Records state that the eighth son of the Duke of Zhou was enfeoffed at Hua as Hua Bo; after the state was destroyed, his descendants adopted Hua as their surname.
The Hua surname's ancient prominent families are associated with Jingzhao; another record places the prominent family in Xiapi Commandery, identified with the former Xiapi city in today's Pi County, Jiangsu.
