One tradition says that Chen Meilin, described as a descendant of Shun, asked his son before his death to adopt the surname Huan, fulfilling his own unrealized wish to enter official service; his son later did so.

The Xing氏考略 records two origins: some descendants of Shang officials called huanshi adopted the office title as their surname, while residents of a Western Zhou place called Huan, approximately near present-day Luoyang in Henan, took their surname from the place name.
