Huan Yuan was a native of Chu in the Spring and Autumn period and was also known as Juan Yuan or Juanzi. The Qilüe and the Book of Han bibliographical treatise record thirteen chapters attributed to him and identify him as a disciple of Laozi.
The recorded generation sequence of the Huan clan in Rugao, Jiangsu, is “Guo Jin Fu Jia Zhi Da Li Ming.”
