Huangfu / Huang-fu
Huangfu is a compound surname, pronounced huáng fǔ, and ranks 418th in the Hundred Family Surnames.
Two origin traditions are given for Huangfu: one traces it to the Western Zhou and an official title; the other traces it to the Zi surname and a change from Huangfu among descendants of the Song royal clan in the Spring and Autumn period.
The Tang History's Genealogical Tables of Chancellors and the General Treatise on Clans record the change from Huangfu to Huangfu: Chongshi, son of Duke Dai of Song, had the style name Huangfu, and his descendant Huangfu Luan changed “fu” from 父 to 甫.
The Huangfu clan hall name is Weiyuan Hall. During the Later Han, Huangfu Gui received appointments including General Who Crosses the Liao, Imperial Secretary, Grand Administrator of Hongnong, and Protector of the Qiang after achievements against the Western Qiang.
The Huangfu lineage originated in what is now eastern Henan, later moved to the State of Lu, and then to Maoling, northeast of present-day Xingping in Shaanxi; its prominent commandery was Anding.
Huangfu Mi (215–282), styled Shian and known as Master Xuanyan, was from Chaona in Anding. He was a physician between the Wei and Jin dynasties and wrote the Jia Yi Jing, Diwang Shiji, and Xuanyan Chunqiu.
