Hui / Hui
Hui (huí) is a currently uncommon surname with a broad distribution. It is found among both Han and Hui people, including in Wuqing of Tianjin, Huanghua of Hebei, and Yutai of Shandong.
The Hui surname has multiple proposed origins, including descendants of Wu Hui, a descendant of Zhurong of the Yun lineage; descendants of the ancient worthy Fang Hui; and Hui people adopting their ethnic name as a surname.
The Hui surname is recorded in the Clan Treatises of the Zheng Tongzhi and Xu Tongzhi. Hui Qian, a native of Chao in the Ming period, served as an investigating censor and later became prefect of Qingyuan.
The recorded commanderies are Yanzhou, Henan, and Lu. The halls are Yanzhou Hall, also called Jiande Hall; Henan Hall; and Lu Commandery Hall, also called Lu State Hall or Donglu Hall.
The account that a Zhang general of the late Yuan army received the surname Hui still requires further examination. The claim that Zhang Shicheng's three sons changed their surnames to Hui, Zhai, and Chang has been identified as a mistaken transmission.
