Origins

Three Origins

The Ji surname has three origins: the Qi branch descends from Tang Yao's descendants, who were enfeoffed in Ji and later adopted the state name; the Ji branch descends from Jin grandee Xi Rui, whose descendants adopted the name of his fief; and the Zi branch descends from the lineage of Weizi and the Song royal clan. Two locations are recorded for the ancient state of Ji: northeast of present-day Jishan, Shanxi, and southeast of present-day Anze, Shanxi.

The Ji surname is recorded in the Zheng Tongzhi: Clan Records. The Xing shi kaolue, citing the Lushi, records descendants of Tang Yao bearing the Ji surname; Zheng Qiao, citing the Zuo Zhuan, records the state of Ji and descendants adopting its name, as well as descendants of Xi Rui adopting the name of his fief.

Geographic Distribution

During the Ming period, the Ji surname numbered approximately 46,000 people. Shandong was its largest distribution area, accounting for about 35% of the total, followed by Jiangsu, Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Hunan, and Anhui. Today, ancestral origins are concentrated mainly in Hebei, Shanxi, and Henan.

Historical Figures

Ji Jun was a Northern Zhou general who excelled in clerical script and imitation calligraphy and was later made Marquis of Changle. Ji Qi was a Ming official who served as a Ministry of Revenue secretary and later as prefect of Yingtian Prefecture; he is recorded for famine relief and abolishing policies harmful to the people.
