The Jia surname has four principal origins: descendants of Jiafu, a grandee of Jin in the Spring and Autumn period; descendants of Ji Jia, a great-grandson of Crown Prince Dan of Yan; a shortened form of the Jinjia clan name of the Jin dynasty; and descendants of Kongfu Jia, a grandee of Song in the Spring and Autumn period.
The Clan Records in the Zheng Tongzhi and Xu Tongzhi both record the Jia surname. Zheng Qiao notes that it descends from Jiafu, a grandee of Jin, and was formed from an ancestral personal name.
People with the Jia surname are distributed in Mianyang, Jiange, and Guanghan in Sichuan; Suizhou in Hubei; Dengfeng, Dengzhou, and Nanyang in Henan; and Fujian. Distribution is also recorded in Shanxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan.
