One branch of the Jiang surname originated from the Zi surname. During the Shang dynasty, the Shang king enfeoffed a clansman at Jiang; after the state of Jiang was destroyed by Dan, Duke of Zhou, in the early Western Zhou, its descendants adopted the state name as their surname. This branch has a history of at least 3,000 years.
Another branch originated from the Ji surname. During the reign of King Cheng of Zhou, Dan, Duke of Zhou, enfeoffed his fourth son Boling at Jiang. In 617 BCE, King Mu of Chu destroyed the state of Jiang, and its descendants adopted the state name as their surname. This branch has a history of at least 2,600 years.
After the fall of the state of Jiang, Jiang people dispersed to Chu, eastern Guizhou, Jiaodong, and the Xiangxiang area of Hunan. Before the Qin dynasty, they were mainly active in Henan; by the Han dynasties, they had moved to Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Hunan, and Sichuan.
Among contemporary Jiang-surname users, native-place registrations are concentrated mainly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Sichuan, accounting for 22.4%, 13.4%, and 13.4%, respectively.
