The Jiang surname is descended from Shennong. According to tradition, the Yan Emperor was born by the Jiang River and took Jiang as his surname from the river's name.

Boyi, Lü Shang, and Qi
Yan Emperor's descendant Boyi was enfeoffed in Lü for his merits in flood control. His descendant Lü Shang, also known as Jiang Ziya, was enfeoffed in Qi at the beginning of the Zhou dynasty. In the early Western Zhou, Jiang descendants also established Qi, Lü, Xu, and Shen.

Historical Migration and Distribution
Before the Qin dynasty, Jiang communities were mainly active in Gansu and Shandong. After the Qin and Han periods, they developed in Henan and formed a notable lineage in Tianshui, Shaanxi. They reached Fujian and Guangdong during the Tang and Song periods, and expanded rapidly in the Northeast during the Qing dynasty, eventually forming three major population clusters in Sichuan, Shandong, and the Northeast.
