One branch of the Jiao surname derives from the Ji surname and descends from Jiaofu, a senior official of Jin during the Spring and Autumn period, adopting an ancestor's name as its surname. This branch is pronounced jiǎo, and most members regard Jiaofu as the founding ancestor of the surname.

Documentary Attestation

The Fengsu Tongyi records that the surname was descended from Jiaofu, a senior official of Jin in the Spring and Autumn period. The Shiji, in its biography of Confucius' disciples, records “Jiangdong man Jiao Ziyong Ci” and notes that Jiao is pronounced qiao.

Migration and Distribution

The Jiao surname has substantial distributions in Qingdao, Yantai, and Dezhou in Shandong; Suzhou in Jiangsu; and Zhuanghe in Dalian, Dehui and Jilin City in Jilin, and Qiqihar in Heilongjiang. The branch at Yuhuangmiao in Wucheng County descends from a migration from Jiao Jiazhuang in Laiyang County in the seventh year of the Yongle era.

A one-volume Jiao family genealogy from Wafangdian, Liaoning, records that the founding migrants, brothers Wanzhen and Wanling, moved in the twentieth year of the Qianlong era from Chuiliu Village in Ninghai Prefecture, Shandong, to Jiajiagou in the northeastern area of Fuzhou, Fengtian. Their descendants later lived in Jiajiagou, Jiajia窑, Huangjia Wopu, and Xiaofang Village.
