Jie / Jie
Today, about 280,000 people bear the Jie surname, accounting for approximately 0.023% of China's population. They are concentrated mainly in Jiangxi, followed by Fujian, Guangdong, and Hunan.
The Jie surname originated from a place name. During Emperor Wu of Han's reign, Shi Ding surrendered to the Han court while serving as governor of Nanyue's Jieyang, was made Marquis Andao, and his descendants adopted the place name as their surname. The compound surname Jieyang later became the single surname Jie.
Jie Meng was originally named Shi Ding. During Emperor Wu of Han's reign, he served as an escort general and later governed ancient Jieyang for more than twenty years. For assisting in the recovery of Nanyue, he was made Marquis Andao and granted the surname Jie and the given name Meng.
Descendants of the Jie lineage are distributed across Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Hunan, Hubei, Hebei, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, as well as Canada, Singapore, and Japan. Larger concentrations are found in Lianjiang in Guangdong, Liancheng in Fujian, and Nanchang, Fengcheng, and Guangchang in Jiangxi. The specific reason the lineage left its ancestral home in Jieyang remains unknown.
Historical figures include the Yuan-dynasty Hanlin academician and writer Jie Xisi, the Ming-dynasty military figure Jie Hong, the military theorist and astronomer Jie Xuan, and the Qing-dynasty poet Jie Xun.
The Zhonghua Jie Genealogy was compiled over eight years and published upon completion in 2020, incorporating Jie descendants from across China.
