Jie / Jie
Jie (Jiè) is a relatively rare surname in current use. It is widely distributed and is found among both Han and Lisu people. The Clan Glossaries of the Zheng Tongzhi and Xu Tongzhi both record it.
Recorded origins of the Jie surname include descendants of the late Xia official Jie Zhi Kui, who adopted the ancestral name as a surname, and descendants of the Spring and Autumn Jin official Jie Zhi Tui, who did likewise.
The records also describe the Jie state of the Eastern Yi during the Zhou period as a dependency of Lu, whose people later adopted the state name as a surname. Whether Jie Zhi Tui was the founding ancestor of the surname and when the Jie state fell remain undetermined, so the two lineages cannot be directly treated as continuous.
The Jie surname is distributed in Beijing, Henan, Shanxi, Shandong, Hebei, Ningxia, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangdong, Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, Zhejiang, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, and is also found in Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States and Mexico.
A Luohe branch is said to have a twenty-character generation sequence compiled jointly by Jie clanspeople from the same county: Wen Feng Yi Tang Rui, Qing Lian Yao Gu Jin, Yan Yi Tong Ji Mei, Zhong Xiao Zuo Ming Zhen.
