One lineage derives from the Ji surname and descends from Zhu Guijue, Prince of Yuanling in the Ming dynasty. In the early Qing, descendants adopted the ancient name 隽 of Yuanling as their surname to avoid persecution; the lineage is pronounced shǔn, and some members restored the Zhu surname in the late Qing.
Another account derives the surname from a Western Zhou ancestral title within the Ji surname. The Miao, Dong, and Yi peoples also include members of the 隽 surname, descended from troops who entered Yunnan and Guizhou during the Ming dynasty and remained there.
