Kou / K'ou
The Kou surname is chiefly associated with the ancient official title Sikou, while some branches arose from sinicized surnames of ethnic minorities.
The Shiben records that the descendants of Ying, son of Duke Ling of Wei, took Kou after serving as Wei Sikou. The Xing shi kaolüe, Xing pu, Yuanhe xing zuan, and Wei shu: Guanshi zhi also record traditions involving Wei Kangshu, Su Fen生, and the transformation of the Gukouyin surname.
The Kou lineage was long prominent in Shanggu Changping, while its distinguished clan was based in Fengyi Commandery. A common ancestral-hall couplet reads: “The surname began with Sikou; its prestige emerged from Shanggu.”
Among the genetic-testing users, Kou ancestral origins are concentrated mainly in Sichuan, Beijing, and Hebei; Sichuan accounts for 18.2%, Beijing 13.9%, and Hebei 8.8%.
In the Eastern Han, Kou Xun served as governor of Henei, Yingchuan, and Runan and was later portrayed at Yuntai Pavilion. In the Northern Song, Kou Zhun served as chancellor and was granted the title Duke of Laiguo.
Kou genealogies from different regions preserve distinct generation-name sequences. For example, the Nanchong branch in Sichuan uses “De Han Fang Long Li Zi Rong Yao Chun Ren Ding Xian Chang Jing Lun Guan Guo Yan Xun Lie Fu Chao Gang Shi Shou Zhong He Yi San Duo Qing Fa Xiang,” while the Yuechi branch uses “Guan Heng Sheng Tai Zheng Da Guang Ming.”
