The Kuang surname is said to derive from the Yao surname and originate in the Zhou dynasty, taking the name of a fief as its surname. After Yu Gong Lie was enfeoffed at Kuang, his descendants adopted Kuang as their surname; Lie is regarded as the progenitor of the surname.
The Bashu Kuang Genealogy records that the Kuang lineage continued from the late Zhou period through the Qin, Han, Jin, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, reaching seventy-five generations by 2010.
The Kuang surname is associated with the commanderies of Jiujiang, Runan, and Lujiang. Its halls include Gao'an Hall, Enrong Hall, Qinmu Hall, Cisheng Hall, Erwu Hall, Qingyi Hall, and Longwang Hall.
Branches of the Kuang lineage successively settled in Qujiang in Jiangyou, Xishan in Nanchang, Qingcheng in Shanggao, and Yungang in Gao'an, later spreading to provinces in southern China. Gao'an and Shanggao have relatively large populations.
Kuang Shuqi, a Ming-dynasty presented scholar from Gao'an, Jiangxi, served as Guizhou educational commissioner and a director in the Ministry of Rites of the Hanlin Academy. His works include Kao Gu Ci Zong.
