Tradition holds that during Gun's flood-control work in the era of Yao and Shun, earth was carried in grass bags to build dikes, and a subordinate responsible for collecting those bags was later granted the surname Kui.
The surname is found in Jiading, Shanghai; Yuyao and Putuo, Zhejiang; and Kaohsiung, Taipei, and Taoyuan in Taiwan. About five to six hundred bearers are recorded in Haiyan, Zhejiang.
