The Lang surname originated from the Ji surname. In the early Western Zhou, King Wu enfeoffed his younger brother the Duke of Zhou in Lu. By the Spring and Autumn period, the Duke of Zhou’s descendant Feibo stationed troops and built a city at Lang, and his descendants adopted the place name as their surname.

Some Lang lineages are associated with place names in the Lu region and the Lu settlement during the Spring and Autumn period; some originated from official titles for lang officials, and others arose through sinicization and surname changes among ethnic minorities.
