Origins

Two Main Origins

The Liu surname has two main origins: one arose from the place name Liuxia associated with Zhan Qin’s fief, and the other arose when Xiong Xin, grandson of King Huai of Chu, took the surname after establishing his capital at Liu.

Migration and Distribution

Historical Migration

Before the Qin period, the Liu surname was concentrated mainly in Shandong; after the Warring States period it moved eastward into Henan. During the Qin and Han periods it entered Hedong and formed a prominent lineage, then spread to Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi during the Wei and Jin periods, and to Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Hunan, and Lingnan during the Tang and Song periods.
