Long / Long
Long is an ancient surname with multiple ethnic and ancestral origins. It is relatively rare today and is found among the Han, Miao, and Tujia peoples.
One branch originated in Longyi of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period and took the settlement's name as its surname. Another came from Fenglong, a Chu official, whose descendants simplified Fenglongshi or Leishishi to the single surname Long.
The Long surname was active mainly in Shandong in its early history, developed in Henan during the Han and Tang periods, and adopted Nanyang Commandery as its commandery of origin. It later spread to Hunan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, and other areas, while Miao Long communities have long lived in several parts of western Hunan.
Wujiangkong, styled Junfang, was from Donghai Lanling. At the end of the Western Han, he served as Jingzhao Yin and Zhijinwu, but was later dismissed and moved to Hepu after opposing the emperor's wishes. Some of his descendants adopted Long from their ancestor's name.
