Lu / Lu
The Lu surname ranks 198th in the Hundred Family Surnames. By population, it ranks about 70th nationwide, accounting for approximately 0.31% of the national population, with about four million people.
The Lu surname has three main origins: the Zhuanxu lineage that formed the Lu Zhong clan; descendants of the Gui surname who took Lu as their surname after residing in Lu Township; and descendants of the Yunyong Lu Hun state who adopted its state name as their surname.
Oracle-bone inscriptions from the reign of King Wu Ding record a Lu state associated with the Lu Zhong clan; it was later annexed by Lu. In 525 BCE, the state of Lu Hun was destroyed by Jin, after which descendants of its ruling clan adopted the state name as their surname.
Existing Lu genealogies record multiple local branches and hall names, including Xing su Tang and Wu ben Tang of Chongming, and Yi jing Tang of Wujiang. They also contain founders, first migrating ancestors, lineages, biographies, and epitaphs.
Before the Qin dynasty, the Lu surname was active in Shaanxi, Henan, Shandong, and Hubei. By the Han dynasty it had spread to Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hunan, Hebei, and Zhejiang; in the early Tang it entered Fujian with migrants from the Central Plains and later spread toward Guangdong, reaching Taiwan in the early Qing.
The documented Lu notable family groups include the Wu Commandery Lu family, with Lu Xun, Lu Ji, and Lu Ye listed among its associated figures.
