The Man surname has two origins, Gui and Wei: descendants of Gui Man adopted the surname from his personal name, and descendants of the State of Man also took Man as their surname.

The earliest recorded integration of the Man surname into the Han Chinese occurred among the Xianbei. During the Tang and Song periods, the Man surname also developed from the Man surname of Jingman through phonetic alteration. Today it is found among Hui, Mongolian, Dong, Manchu, Miao, and Tujia peoples, among others.
