Mao / Mao
Mao is a relatively rare modern Han Chinese surname recorded in both Xu Tongzhi and the Clan Treatise of Qing Tongzhi.
Three origin traditions are recorded: descent from Duke Ji, descent from the third son of the Duke of Zhou, and a change from the Mao surname written 茅. The first two are described respectively as unprovable and groundless, while the surname-change tradition appears in Mao genealogies from Wuhu and Xuancheng.
The ancestral commandery associated with the Mao surname is Runing, and its hall name is Lüye Hall.
The Mao surname has relatively few bearers. It is concentrated across several cities in Jiangsu and Anhui and is also found in Changxing, Yuping, Lulong, Tangshan, Yulin, Yan'an, Jiujiang, Qichun, and Jingdezhen.
Mao Qin, a Ming-era native of Lishui in Jiangsu, earned the jinshi degree in the Chenghua wuxu year and later served as Chief Minister of the Nanjing Court of Judicial Review.
Mao Jianxin (1629–1681), courtesy name Chuwan and art name Yifeng, placed third in the 1679 jinshi examination and was appointed a compiler in the Hanlin Academy. His writings were later collected as Huaxi Caotang Yigao.
