The Meng surname is described as having two main origins: descendants of Qingfu, a son of Duke Huan of Lu by a concubine, and descendants of Meng Zhi, the elder brother of Duke Ling of Wei. Both are recorded as descendants of the Ji surname of the Zhou royal house.

Migration and Distribution
Meng clans migrated from the Qufu and Zoucheng area of Shandong across China. Northern branches were mainly distributed in Hebei, Henan, and Shanxi; during the Ming and Qing periods, southern branches moved into Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, and Sichuan, while some branches moved to Guizhou, Yunnan, and overseas.

Meng Ke and the Meng Surname
At the end of the Spring and Autumn period, Meng Ke of Lu, also known as Mencius, rose to prominence, inherited and developed Confucius’s teachings, and further linked the Meng surname with Confucian thought.
