The Mi Surname Origin
The Miao surname mainly originated from the Mi surname. During the Spring and Autumn period, Benhuang, son of Chu official Bofen, fled to Jin and received Miao as his fief; his descendants adopted the fief name as their surname.

Research Notes
Other Origins and Uncertainty
Another account derives the Miao surname from the ancient healer Miaofu, but this origin is disputed. Among ethnic minorities, the surname includes descendants of Baekje and Goguryeo who adopted a Han surname, as well as surname changes or sinicized surname changes among Mongolian, Hui, and Manchu people.
