Mu / Mu
Mu is one of China's early and long-established surnames, ranking 98th in the Hundred Family Surnames.
The Mu surname has two main origins, Zi and Ji. The Zi branch derives from descendants of Duke Mu of Song, who adopted his posthumous title as their surname; the Ji branches derive from descendants of Duke Mu of Lu and Duke Mu of Zheng, likewise adopting posthumous titles.
During the Northern Wei period, the Xianbei compound surname Qiumuling followed Emperor Xiaowen south, settled in Luoyang, and changed to the Han Chinese surname Mu; this is recorded in the Treatise on Official Surnames of the Book of Wei.
The Mu surname is associated with Runan Commandery and Henan Commandery; no specific hall name is listed.
Migration of the Mu surname began in the Spring and Autumn period. After civil unrest in Song in 609 BCE, some Mu families fled Song; by the transition from the Qin to the Han, the surname had spread from the Central Plains to eastern regions including Chu, and its migration range expanded further after the Song dynasty.
Mu Xiu was a Northern Song literary figure who promoted classical prose and significantly influenced the Northern Song classical-prose movement; Mu Ning and his five sons also appear in the recorded migration lineage.
