Nian / Nian
Nian (粘, nián) is an uncommon surname found among both Han and Manchu people, with distribution recorded in Jing County of Hebei, Longkou of Shandong, Taiyuan and Changzhi of Shanxi, and Shaowu of Fujian.
The main lineage of the Nian surname derives from a branch of the Jurchen Wanyan surname. Wanyan Zonghan's original name was "Nian Mohe"; his sons Zhenzhu and Gehannu adopted the character "Nian" from their father's name as their surname to avoid suspicion and danger during the late reign of Jin Xizong.
The Clan Records sections of the Continued General History and the Qing General History both include the Nian surname. The Study of Surnames records two explanations: "descended from the Jin-era Nianhe clan" and "possibly descended from Yuan-era Nianhan."
The Nian lineage originated in Longquan among the Changbai Mountains and the Heilongjiang region, now Shihuan Town of Ning'an, Heilongjiang; Longquan is its commandery origin.
The Nian surname is mainly distributed in Fujian and Taiwan. Recorded figures include about 900 people in Jinjiang, over 40 in Shishi, over 500 in Quanzhou, over 1,100 in Nan'an, about 1,000 in Laiyang, Shandong, and nearly 1,000 in Kongqiao and Wujiazhuang, Xingtai, Hebei.
Wanyan Zonghan, originally named Nian Mohe, was a senior Jin official and a Jurchen military and political figure. Nian Gehannu was sent to persuade Yelü Dashi to submit, was killed, and was later posthumously awarded the title Zhaoyi Grand General.
The History of Jin is not Zonghan's genealogy and does not provide a systematic record of his family lines; the available historical materials cannot establish how many descendants he had.
