The Pei surname originated from the Ying surname and descends from Boyi. During the reign of King Xi of Zhou, an ancestor was enfeoffed as lord of Jieyi and adopted Pei by removing the “邑” component and adding “衣.”
The Pei lineage's commandery is Hedong, roughly the Xia County area east of the Yellow River in present-day Shanxi. Its hall names include Luye Hall and Duguo Hall.
Before the Qin period, Pei was active in the Shaanxi-Shanxi region. After the Qin and Han periods it expanded into Hebei, Liaoning, and Sichuan; during the Northern and Southern Dynasties it reached Hubei and the northern bank of the Yangtze; in the Tang and Song periods it entered Jiangxi and Zhejiang; by the Ming period it was distributed north and south of the Yangtze.
Historical figures of the Pei surname include the Jin cartographer Pei Xiu, the Western Jin Secretariat Director Pei Kai, the Liu Song historian Pei Songzhi, and the Tang chancellor Pei Du and poet Pei Di.
The Pei genealogy website lists 32 Pei genealogies from 10 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. The Yixing genealogy records a move from Wenxi to Yixing, Jiangsu, in the late Tang; the Tiantai genealogy records a move from Pei-bo Village in Wenxi, Shanxi, to Tiantai, Zhejiang, at the end of the Yuan.
