The Peng surname has four origin traditions: one derives from the Jian surname and takes the name of the state of Dapeng; one derives from the Yun surname as a descendant of Zhurong; one is associated with Lao Peng and Shang diviners; and others arose through surname changes among Hu, Qiang, Nanman, and various ethnic groups in the Qing period.
Records concerning the Peng surname appear in Tongzhi: Shizulüe, Xingshi Xunyuan, Guoyu, Xingshi Kaolüe, and oracle-bone materials. Guoyu lists Peng as one of the eight surnames descended from Zhurong.

By the end of the Shang period, some Peng families had moved to Nanyang in Henan; during the Han period the surname developed in Huaiyang; and during the Wei and Jin periods many moved south because of warfare and official transfers.
